She Was Afraid of Her Stomach
When we first spoke on the phone, she told me something very personal.
She was born with a rare condition. As a baby, she had a complicated surgery to move her organs back inside her body so everything could function properly.
Because of that surgery, she carries significant scarring across her stomach.
She told me she feels self conscious about it.
She wondered how we would hide it.
The Story Written on Her Skin
When she arrived at the studio, she was warm and lovely and completely feminine.
And I found it interesting.
She had described herself as strong. As masculine. As someone who comes off a little hard.
But standing in front of me was softness. Warmth. Grace.
The only thing she seemed unsure about were the scars.
I gently told her something important.
Your scars are not something we need to erase.
They are part of your story.
They are proof of survival.
They are proof that your body has carried you through something extraordinary.
Photographing Strength Beautifully
We did not hide her stomach.
We did not crop her body in ways that felt unnatural.
Instead, we photographed her intentionally.
With light that softened the edges.
With poses that elongated and flattered.
With angles that honored her shape.
The goal was not to remove her history.
The goal was to show her beauty with it.
When I showed her a preview on the back of my camera, she paused.
She said, I cannot believe that is me.
And she was not looking at a scar.
She was looking at a woman.
What We See Is Not Always What the World Sees
So many women walk into my studio believing they look one way.
Too strong.
Too masculine.
Too scarred.
Too imperfect.
But the world often sees something completely different.
It is my job to reflect that back to you.
Not a filtered version.
Not a porcelain doll.
But you.
Soft. Feminine. Powerful. Real.
A Gentle Reminder
Your scars do not disqualify you from being photographed.
They do not make you less beautiful.
They do not make you less feminine.
They are chapters of your story.
And your story deserves to be honored, not hidden.
If you have been waiting until your body feels perfect, consider this your sign.
You are already worthy of being seen.
Exactly as you are.
